Analysis of the African origins of CSR: Human Rights (HR)

Analysis of the African origins of CSR with regard to the 07 central themes.

MODE 2: Human Rights (HR)

Human rights are the inalienable rights of each individual, without distinction of race, sex, ethnicity, religion: right to life, prohibition of torture, slavery; respect of freedom of expression, religion. These values governed life before Western penetration around 1800. The DH were first African, because life was sacred and no one could take it away and death was considered a sign of the gods’ anger.

Africans did not know torture or slavery. The diversity of the gods expressed the diversity and inclusion of religions. Before, there was a god for all aspects of social life. Speech was free, since it was expressed, in assembly, in the public square. There were no prisons either and freedom of movement was seen in the ability to move around. Life was governed by the social contract. The social prohibitions framed the union, the discipline and the community work.

Human rights were respected across age groups and secret societies to which the individual belonged.
